I just got a new iPad pro and did not set up a passcode and was only using the fingerprint reader to gain access. Now it is not recognizing my fingerprint and I cannot get into my new ipad

I bought the iPad pro from best buy. It was a returned unit being sold as new. When I set up the iPad i was never prompted to set up a passcode before i set up the fingerprint reader. So i have been using the fingerprint reader for the past week and now it is not working and I cannot access the device. So I was able to set up the fingerprint reader without establishing a passcode first. I am now locked out of my new device.

The only thing I can think of is that the previous buyer had established a passcode (but not a fingerprint).

You need to put in the passcode to get to the point where you can set up TouchID so, even if the previous owner had set up a passcode, the OP would have needed that to set up TouchID. The OP's story's just not making sense.

shishira Maybe I am mistaken but I thought the iDevice usually asks for the passcode when setting up the TouchID

I just set up a new iPad Pro about a week ago and thought - as far as I remember - just did the touch ID initially. I then went into settings and added a passcode. That is how I remember it - but I may be wrong; although I just asked him how he did his new iPhone SE and he remembers doing the same thing: touch ID first. But, both our memory modules may be faulty.

Because a passcode is required to get into the iOS device once it's restarted, you can't set up TouchID without one. The device can't access the Secure Enclave, where the fingerprint information is stored, until it's completely rebooted. I think you may be misremembering.

No passcode was required to set up fingerprint id. No passcode was required for access until tonight when the fingerprint reader stopped working. Not mistaken in my recollection. Now I am trying to restore my device to the original setting but my computer cannot download the 2 gig restore file in 15 minutes before the system times out. I guess I will have to take the iPad back to best buy.
