iphone 6s sim not valid abroad
Just got to Hong Kong and was using my iphone 6s. Turned off airplane mode and got an SMS from Verizon about call/data/SMS charges. Turned off my cellular data/sms/voice and somewhere in the 10 minutes the phone locked up and required activation. I can't do anything without activation, its like a brick.Don't know why this is, as VZN phones are supposed to be unlocked. So hopped onto Wifi and tried activating but it says SIM NOT VALID. What's going on here? I don't even know my Verizon password to call back home and try and fix this (on a family account).I took the SIM out and it works OK, but I'm guessing now when I get to Thailand I won't be able to get a local sim card working there. Grr....what a major annoyance. I don't have a tool to get the SIM in and out (borrowed from someone) so no way to troubleshoot this. Can anyone help?!!?
If you did not setup roaming with Verizon, that would be why the device is not working right now. As far as activation, that would be done via the computer. What kind of SIM were you using when you tried to activate and got the SIM Not Valid error? The device should be unlocked, but you should not have any issues with a local SIM if you have the device working without a SIM now, unless Verizon has done something to your account. Then you say that you cannot remove the SIM. Not sure exactly what it is. And, you do not need a tool to remove the SIM, a standard paper clip straightened out will work just fine. What was this SMS from Verizon about charges?
I got a roaming SMS from VZN ($2/min, $.50sms etc).
Turned off the cell service/data/roaming and sometime after that it began asking for activation.
I did remove the SIM but I'm at the airport and had to borrow a clip from someone, so I can't at the moment put it back in, etc as I don't have a tool.
I contacted Apple Chat and they said all phones are locked and he would try to active it, but then he sort of quit the chat without finishing it.
I'm sure this will be fun. Seems like I've had an activation issue with just about every iPhone I've ever used, what a nusiance.
Well, the statement about all phones being locked is false. All iPhones from Verizon since the iPhone 5 have the GSM side of the device unlocked as part of an agreement with the FCC. If there is something that needed to be done with this special SIM from Verizon, you need to contact them about that. I'm still not sure what the SMS you received was, and whether that contained any information regarding your issue. I should hope that you could find a paper clip somewhere that you could keep. That will help with getting into the SIM tray. If you have access to a computer, I would try to contact Verizon and ask for assistance from them regarding this problem. Do you still have your original Verizon LTE SIM?
