Wifi Issues on all-airport hardware based network

Warning, rant ahead. Our home is run on Apple hardware. We use a Mac Pro as our server, Airport Extreme as our primary internet router, Airport Express to extend the network, AppleTV's for entertainment and iPhones and Apple Watches for communication. What annoys me beyond reason is that the Watch constantly ends up not being connected to the phone. If the phone is in the family room (where the AP-Extreme resides) and I am in the master bedroom (which has an AP-Express) the Watch will show as disconnected. Now, if we were running on Belkin or Netgear network hardware I would have loved to attribute this "disconnect" to that, but since we are on all Apple hardware it makes me really angry when this happens. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

If anyone from Apple actually reads this, please...PLEASE...add some sort of network interface to WatchOS so we can select which SSID to connect to in case this amazing (read constantly disappointing) $1000 watch becomes confused by all the other Apple hardware around it.

Hi Hugo

Apple Watch can connect to a Wi-Fi network if the network is 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz and your iPhone, while connected to your watch via Bluetooth, has connected to the network before.

If you are experiencing issues with your watch connecting in this way, try these steps:
  • Before starting, ensure that you have made a note of: your Wi-Fi network name, the type of encryption that it uses and your Wi-Fi password.
  • With your iPhone connected to the Wi-Fi network and with your watch close by and connected to your iPhone by Bluetoothn your iPhone, go to: Settings> Wi-Fi.
  • Tap on the "i" icon at the right hand side of your current Wi-Fi connection's entry.
  • On the next screen, tap on Forget This Network - allow a few moments.
  • Then, with a short pause in between, disable and re-enable Wi-Fi using the toggle at the top of the Wi-Fi screen.
[*]Reconnect your iPhone to your Wi-Fi network.
If you have a hidden network (ie the network name / SSID is not broadcast), choose to add the network via "Other", then enter the network name, encryption type and password.
  • After your iPhone has reconnected, allow a short time for the information to be shared to your watch.

Your watch should now connect to the Wi-Fi network successfully whenever your paired iPhone is not available via Bluetooth.

To test this:
  • Place your iPhone into Airplane Mode (via the Control Center or via Settings> Airplane Mode).
  • On your watch, swipe up on the watch face, then swipe left / right until you find the Settings Glance. This should now state Connected and show a green Cloud icon to indicate that it is connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Swipe down again on your watch screen to return to the watch face and disable Airplane Mode on your iPhone.
